Several years ago we began to expand our company, Schmidt Educational Authoring Services (SEAS L.L.C.) to include research and to develop on-line courses about the coastal environment and coastal policy issues.
At that time we had to upgrade from sailing small boats on lakes to large sailboats on the ocean. We chose sailboats because they are quiet and environmentally friendly; they move slowly, use wind power (free!) and therefore allow for closer contact with the coastal environment. Rather than immediately buying a boat, we decided that chartering would allow us to explore different coastal venues with different environments and challenges, and also to check out different boats for their suitability. However, in order to charter sailboats large enough to live on, most companies require you to have experience and certification on similar boats. How do you get there? This blog shares our experiences getting certified. We will include some great stories, some very funny moments, a few close calls, and lots of very practical tips.
